The Marketing Store London was thrilled to be announced in Campaign Best Places to Work 2019: Top 50 in March 2019.
Gemma Popejoy, our Global VP of People, shares the story behind the award:
“At The Marketing Store, we intentionally spend a lot of time exploring what makes a ‘best agency to work for’. Our mission is to Get Closer; because the more connections, and the better relationships people have, the more likely they are to grow and achieve their ambition.
Most of what we think makes us the best comes from our people: it’s their agency, their ideas, their needs – the things that they feel will help them create their best work. We aim above all to be a top place to grow. As a result, we think we have a pretty potent mix that makes TMS the kind of community deserving of a ‘best’ accolade – from important industry folks like Campaign, and just as importantly from our people who choose TMS.
To give you a flavour, here are a few of the concepts we’ve put into action over the last year:
We help turn talent into skills
We continually review every part of how TMS can help our people develop. We expect people to bring their talent – and, in return, we will challenge, grow and support them through the TMS Arena, our unique, purpose-built development programme that sits at the heart of the work driven by the Leadership Team at TMS. We are on a journey to be world famous for our talented people managers; we are building a team of inspiring, effective, supportive leaders who are truly focused on unlocking potential and leading the kind of teams we all want to play on. We also aim to support our people on their good and not so good days (as we are all only human) through thoughtful wellness initiatives in an environment built on trust.
We help our skilled people to set a target
As a prerequisite to joining our dedicated TMS team, we ask all of our people to define their own ‘OMG’: the One Mammoth Goal they are looking to achieve perhaps in their lifetime – not just at TMS. Our Film and Animation Team want to win a Bafta, our creatives a Cannes Lion, while others want to become creative directors, launch new products or start their own businesses as entrepreneurs. And some of them are already doing it and side hustling; we’re incredibly proud that two of our people published their first books last year!
Right now, we are united behind creating extraordinary work, but we get that it takes all kinds of thoughtful creativity, inspiration and skills and that doesn’t necessarily happen nine to five.
We thus implemented ‘Your Hours’; built on collaboration, communication and team work, which is designed to give flexibility to all around how they work.
We help them achieve those targets by connecting them with others
Extraordinary work requires an extraordinary approach. For the last couple of years, we have partnered closely with the folks from The Bravest Path who deliver pioneering relationship skills. This helps fully maximise the potential of our diversity. Like the rest of the industry we could be more diverse and inclusive, and we’re working with other change-makers – such as Fearless Futures – and we’re committed to making real difference here.
Our Campaign Top 50 entry was created and submitted by a talented mixed discipline team across the business; they wrote this in their words with no Leadership input. As a Leadership Team, we wanted to know what they thought made us the best: that’s what we are proud of. We are therefore hugely excited that Campaign is in agreement and we have been listed in the Top 50 agencies in London in 2019.
If we sound like your kind of people, then drop us a note. We are always looking for like-minded team players with big ambitions.”
